Just Drink the Milk

Growing up, my stepdad had a rule that we were not to put open cups in the fridge. As an adult, that makes sense. As a kid, I just couldn’t always finish a drink.

Well, one day, my sister was pouring us both a glass of milk. I said I only wanted half a glass. She poured a full one. I don’t even remember why we were using the big glasses. We had cups.

Sure enough, I couldn’t drink it all. I knew I wasn’t allowed to put it in the fridge. So I told Shy I was going to ask Devohn if I could put it in the fridge just this once and drink it with supper. So, I put it in the fridge and walked all the way out to the back, down to where the driveway stopped at his workshop. I asked.

Now, there’s something you need to know about Devohn. He was an engineer. Nothing was ever just a β€˜yes’ or β€˜no’. He asked questions. He needed all the information. How full was the glass to begin with? Why did you pour so much? How much is left now? Do you PROMISE you’ll remember it at suppertime?

So I endured the Spanish Inquisition and he said I could, in fact, leave it in the fridge for supper. By this time he knew more about the glass of milk, its location, age and serial number than I did. I went on my way and did kid type things.

I forget what exactly happened but I was summoned. Not a suggestion. A β€œKelli, you get in here RIGHT NOW!”

That was unusual for Devohn.

So I put down the Barbie and went.

He asked me if that was my glass in the fridge. Well, of course it was…except it was so full, some had spilled over and made a mess. I told him I put it in half full. He looked so disappointed. β€œWhy did you lie about something as simple as milk?”

“I didn’t.”

“Just tell me the truth.”

” I put half a glass in the ice box. I didn’t even want a whole glass but Shy poured me a whole one.”

He told me that I was going to get a spanking for lying. I knew not to argue. Right then, it dawned on both of us what had happened. We could see it in each other’s faces.

Then, we heard Mom…

β€œ Shyanne! What are you doing?!”

That toot was on her hands and knees peeking into the kitchen watching me get in trouble. And she was trying not to giggle.

I learned an important lesson that day.

I still drink out of coffee mugs instead of glasses. πŸ˜‚
