The Broken Window

One day, my sister and I were given the chore of cleaning the patio off my mom’s room.

I was probably in fourth or fifth grade, so Shy would’ve been in the seventh or eighth grade. We were the only ones in the house so we were working at our own pace.

You know how kids are, cutting up and singing into the broom handles and such. Well, she was in the middle of some chorus or other and I found a lizard on the window sill I was sweeping beside. I had a GREAT idea. I got behind ShyShy and put the lizard down the back of her shirt.

I thought it was funny.

She did not.

When she turned around, I realized I was in trouble. She could outrun me in a minute. I took off running.

My room was on the farthest side of the house from the patio. To this day, I don’t know how she didn’t catch me.

I got to my room and slammed the door. But I couldn’t get it locked…because I still had the broom in my hand!

I was up against the door and she was trying to push it open and yelling she was gonna kill me.

I believed her.

I turned just enough to throw the broom and put my weight against the door and lock it.

“WHAT was that?!”

I said, “ I’m pretty sure I just threw the broom through the window but I’m too scared to look.”

“Let me in.”

“Do you promise you won’t kill me?”

“Oh, you have bigger problems than me right now. Devohn’s on the tractor mowing and he’ll be coming by the window in a minute.”

I opened the door and then looked at the window. Yep, the broom had broken it.

“Wow, you really threw it pretty hard. The window’s completely shattered. You’re in SO MUCH TROUBLE! You better go tell Devohn before he sees it.”

She was a bit more smug than she probably should’ve been.

” You know the lizard I put down your shirt?”

“Yeah.”

“It was a dead one.”

I brushed past her to find out my fate.

As it ended up, Devohn laughed about the lizard. He did not laugh about the window.

I was spanked and grounded. Shy was grounded.

From then on. I just hung lizards from my ears. I never threw one on Shy again.

Until next time, take care of the people you love and don’t forget to make a few memories worth telling.
