I Thought Teaching Knot Tying was a Good Idea

I used to teach different ages in church.

One time, I decided that I was going to teach the kids some useful skills on Sunday evenings and link them to some lessons we had during the other classes I taught.

I had a group that was pretty faithful in attendance at that time so I could build lessons and skills on different days. We used the skills days as lesson reviews.

Some of the older kids would also be my helpers, so I could do a little more with the kids who were highly active and had a hard time sitting still for regular lessons.

Anyway, I had always had trouble tying knots, so I thought I’d have to learn to teach the kids. And, I knew they’d enjoy earning another badge.

Well, I struggled, but we got through it. I was still terrible at knots, but I had asked a man at church who, did know, to come and show the kids. We had a great time, and we had an end of the unit party.

Well, the next Sunday, another member of the church took over the duties of the Children’s Director and I became the helper. I had asked an older teen and an adult to watch the kids on the playground so I could get some things done I needed to and show the new director the Sunday Night room, where I kept supplies.etc.

When it was time, I asked one of the kids in the room to call the other kids in for class. The door was right beside our classroom. The kids were awfully fidgety and were exchanging looks. I thought it might be because we had a new teacher in the class and they were having a new program and Bible study presented to them.

While I was looking around, I said, ” Hey, somebody’s missing.”

The kids kind of giggled. I realized who it was.

‘Where is he?”Exchanged looks and laughter.

“Tell. Me. Now.” One of my children said, “Oh, he’s on the swing set.” And the others laughed.

Well, the kid was kinda mouthy and would push limits if you’d let him. So I excused myself and went to retrieve him from the swings. I thought I was just gonna stick my head out the door and call him in.

Oh, my word!

One look at the swing set and I about died.

I went outside and tried to untie him. Those toots had had enough of him mouthing off and tied him to the swingset with the jumpropes.

“Well, don’t go anywhere,” I laughed. “I can’t get the knots undone. I’ll be back.”

I had to go tell the new Children’s Director that we had a boy tied to the swings and I needed help getting the knots untied…and, apparently, according to him, it was one of my kid’s ideas but most of the others helped, too.

After church, I had a word with the two that had left a playground full of “knotty” kids unattended lol
