A Snake in the Storm Shelter

Memaw Mae told us a story about when she was a youngun’.

She grew up in Arkansas. And up there, they have storm shelters.

There was a big storm that was coming through. Her parents gathered her and her four sisters and headed for the shelter.

They hurried into the shelter and realized they had company…a snake!

Memaw’s dad only had a flashlight, nothing else. They had to get the door closed and didn’t have time to get the snake out. So he stepped on it so it didn’t bite anybody.

He had to stand there on that snake through the whole storm. When the storm finally passed and her dad said it was okay to open the door, Memaw shot out of there first.

She’s scared of snakes, something fierce. She said no matter how bad a storm was, her parents couldn’t make her go back inside the shelter. She would hide under the bed but she never set foot in that shelter again.
