Don’t Pray for Patience

Back when I was a young mama, I was in a Sunday School class with other women. I was the youngest one in the class.

My girls were pretty little and VERY active. I was tired a lot. Exhausted, actually. They were a year apart and did I mention very active? Lol

Anyway, the class was sitting around the table and talking about praying and telling some things we’d like each other to pray for us through the week. When it was my turn I didn’t even have to think about it…

β€œI pray for patience all the time,” I said. β€œ Y’all can guess why I need it.”

Everyone got real quiet. Like, you could’ve heard a pin drop a mile away quiet.

My teacher, Ms. Shirley, said, β€œ Oh, Baby. You NEVER pray for patience. Just stop doing that.” My eyebrows raised and I looked around the room. The other ladies were nodding in agreement.

” Well, I need it and praying for it seems like the thing to do.” I didn’t understand what I said wrong.

Ms. Shirley chuckled and replied,” Honey, how do you get patient? Through trials. You never pray for patience unless you want to go through trials.”

She smiled when she saw it dawning on me. I understood it then.

That was around 28 or 29 years ago. When I feel like my patience is waning, my prayers now go something like this:

β€œDear Lord,

Please give me patience for the things I already need it for. Please don’t add anything else to be patient about. When I asked for patience all those years ago, I didn’t know what I was doing. I just need enough to get me through the day.”

All three of my children made it to adulthood so I guess I got the patience I needed πŸ˜‚

Until next time, take care of the people you love and don’t forget to make a few good memories worth telling.

Around here stories are worth sharing. Have you prayed for something and what you asked was answered but not the way you thought it would be? I’d love to hear about it!
