Pawpaw Ted built my sister and I a playhouse.

I don’t remember when. I remember it always being there.
He planted coleus around it and it would come back every year.
Being the only two grandchildren, we were quite spoiled. We had both a front and back porch on our playhouse with little chairs we could sit out on our porches.
It was painted white and had a shingled roof, just like a real house. And it was packed with toys, coloring books, story books and all manner of childhood delights.
We had a chalkboard on one door. Nanny hung up a rope and gave me some of the clothespins off her line to hang our works of art we colored and painted. We had a little child sized table and chairs inside.
I also remember my Grandma Bird had just come back from visiting my aunt in Hawaii and brought us each a hula skirt, a coconut purse and coconut bikini tops that we kept in the playhouse.
We had bunny and dog banks with change my pawpaw would put inside them. We had babydolls to rock and toy boxes crammed full.
I can remember my Nanny telling us ,”I’m going to go look at the playhouse later, and I don’t want to see toys all over the floor.” That was probably her way of getting us out of the house and back into the playhouse lol.
There were some toys in it that had belonged to my dad. One of them was a pistol. Dad still has it. I thought it was cool playing with my dad’s old toys.
Oh, and the stilts Pawpaw made us lived in the playhouse, too. Pawpaw put his old mailbox on the front porch. When he knew we were coming, he’d put junk mail in it for us. That’s one of the first things we’d do when we went to Pawpaw and Nanny’s was to check our mail!
I loved that old playhouse. I spent many magical hours in it stringing beads, coloring, and dressing up like a hula girl to walk on stilts.
Until next time, take care of the people you love and don’t forget to make a few memories worth telling.
