Don’t Flip in Front of the News!

When my Granny Mac got older, she had to move in with Grandma Helen and Pawpaw Gene. She lived with them for nine years, I believe.

Occasionally, she’d come and stay a week or two with us in Batson.

It was always a special time when she came. I was interested in the early twenties (1920’s) and she would sit with me and let me pester her, I mean ask her questions, for a long time.

Now Granny was in her eighties. She could barely see and could hear even less.

She had hearing aids. They didn’t worked very well. We still had to talk loud and repeat ourselves a lot.

Granny wanted to still help do what she could. She would help me and Shy wash dishes. She’d wash, one of us would rinse, then later we’d sneak back into the kitchen and rewash the dishes because she couldn’t see well enough to get them clean.

Well one of the days she was at our house, me and Shy were cuttin’ up. I don’t know where Mom was, but she wasn’t in the house or we would’ve been in trouble.

We thought we were hot stuff doing cheers and flips in the living room for Granny. We were lucky we didn’t break any of Momma’s antiques. Or we woulda been hot stuff in hot water lol

So, anyway, we were hamming it up and putting on a show for Granny. All of a sudden she started fussing at us.

“Girls you better hush up and stop turning those flips! I’m watching the news!”

The TV was turned off.

Poor ol’ Granny was watching us and thought she was watching TV the whole time!

Me and Shy busted out laughing. “Girls, hush up now!”

“Yes, Ma’am, Granny!”

We left the living room and never told her the TV was off. I don’t know if she ever figured it out but we loved her too much to say anything.

Even though it got us in trouble with her.

Until next time, take care of the people you love and don’t forget to make a few memories worth telling.
