One Way Granny Survived the Depression

Dad says that my great grandma, Granny Mac, told him about surviving the Great Depression. One of the stories she told him was about gathering food.

Everybody was poor around them and food was getting pretty scarce. They were just about starving.

In the evening, before the chickens went to roost, they would pull up the floor boards of the bathroom.

They sprinkled a little grain, or whatever they had that the chickens would eat, onto the ground under the bathroom. The neighbor’s chickens would come to get a bedtime snack.

They would catch one chicken and hurry up and put the floorboard back in place. The family would clean and cook the chicken at night so nobody would happen to stop by and catch them.

When that chicken soup or gumbo would run out, if they hadn’t been able to buy or work for groceries, They’d open up the bathroom floor again and whisper,

“Here, chick, chick, chick…”

Until next time, take care of the people you love and don’t forget to make a few memories worth telling.
